Naples (Neapolitan dialect: Napule) is a town and local government comune in the Campania region of southern Italy, in the eponymous province of Naples, capital of the Campania region and the province of Naples. It is the third largest city in Italy by population, after Rome and Milan. The city plays a vital role in Italy in terms of history, art, culture, architecture, music and astronomy. It is of great importance in the history of Italy due to its 2,800-year history and the fact that it was the capital of the Kingdom of Naples (which was an autonomous state during the period 1285 – 1816).

The 720-hectare old historical city of Naples is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
