Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP “Cherry tomato“ is one of the oldest and most typical products of the Campania tradition.

The characteristics of this cherry tomato from Piennolo del Vesuvio are a thicker skin, a strong connection with the stem, a high concentration of sugar and acidity: these fruits are therefore long-lasting crops that do not change their organoleptic characteristics. These characteristics are closely linked to the pedoclimatic factors of the region: the soil here is volcanic, so it is composed of pyroclastic material from the eruptions of Vesuvius. In this special environment, the quality of the tomatoes reaches perfection. The richness of organic acids gives the “sourness” of flavor that is characteristic of these Vesuvian cherry tomatoes. Besides genetic specificity, another important factor is the environmentally friendly farming method: – for example – little water for irrigation means a very important maintenance in a protected area like the Vesuvius National Park. Thanks to its characteristics and versatility, the cherry tomato from Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP is a fundamental ingredient of Campania and Neapolitan cuisine.
